"First among the Greeks, the Chalcidians who came by sea from Euboea founded Naxos and erected an altar to Apollo Archegetes..."
(Thucydides, The Peloponnesian War, Book VI, 3, 1)

Naxos was the first Greek colony in Sicily.
It was founded around 734 BC by the "Chalcidians of Chalkis" and the "Naxians", coming from the large island in the Aegean, from whom Naxos also took its name.
It is therefore a very ancient town, whose interesting origins are recounted in the Archaeological Park that extends for about forty hectares and is located at Capo Schisò. Inside, we admire archaic sacred buildings surrounded by simple residential buildings and kilns where clay was fired; the remains of the ruined walls that surrounded this complex are also visible.
Some of the artifacts found in this place can be seen in the Archaeological Museum located in a small fort built in the 17th-18th century, another among the attractions or things to see in Giardini Naxos.
Not to be missed is the Castle of Schisò, a military fortification built in the Middle Ages.

As we wander through the streets of this town, we discover that there are also other things to see, such as the Greek iron statue the “Nike” by Carmelo Mendola, at Capo Schisò, erected to commemorate the twinning solemnly declared in 1965 between Giardini Naxos and Chalkida Euboea.
