Castelmola is among the most beautiful villages in Italy and is located near Taormina.

The village, small and well-preserved, is perched on top of a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, while the highest point can be reached by following a path from the main square of the village, Piazza Sant’Antonino, up to the ruins of a castle.

In the square there is a viewpoint that offers a splendid view of the Ionian coast and the city of Taormina, the sea, and the Calabrian coast.

The origins of Castelmola date back to the pre-Hellenic period, while the name is inspired by the shape of the large rock on which it stands, which resembles a “millstone”.

Not to be missed:

  • Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, rebuilt between 1934 and 1935
  • Church of San Giorgio, which dates back to the 15th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of Castelmola
  • Church of San Biagio
  • Ruins of the Castle
  • Bar Turrisi
  • The Church of the Annunziata.

In Castelmola, a visit to a very special place is a must: Bar Turrisi, one of the most curious bars in the world. The venue is known for a rather risqué detail but also for the production of the famous almond wine.
